A leaking roof in Alaska is more than just annoying – it can become a real problem fast. Whether you live in Wasilla, Palmer, or Anchorage, water getting into your home is something you don’t want to ignore. A slow drip today could mean major repairs tomorrow.

So what should you do when you first notice it? Here’s how to take control of the situation and keep the damage to a minimum.

Stay calm and protect what’s underneath

First things first – don’t panic. Move anything that could get damaged out of the way: furniture, electronics, rugs. Put down towels or buckets to catch the water. If you see your ceiling sagging, resist the urge to poke it. That bubble could be holding more water than you think.

If you’re unsure, it’s safer to call a professional than risk making the problem worse.

Take pictures of the damage

Even if it doesn’t seem like a big deal, grab your phone and take some pictures. Document the leak itself, any stains or wet spots, and anything that’s been damaged. This will help with insurance – and give your roofer something to work with when they arrive.

Also make a note of when the leak started and whether it gets worse during rain or when the snow melts.

Try to find where it’s coming from

Leaks are sneaky. Water doesn’t always drip straight down from the hole – it might travel along a beam or pipe first. That’s why the spot on your ceiling isn’t always where the actual problem is.

Take a look outside: are there missing shingles? Is the flashing around your chimney or vents cracked? Are the gutters full or overflowing? If you have attic access, check for damp insulation or dark spots on the wood.

If you’re not sure where the water’s coming in – or don’t feel safe climbing up – just give us a call. We know what to look for.

Don’t wait too long

It might be tempting to put it off for a few days, especially if the leak seems small. But time matters. Water that gets into your roof structure or insulation can lead to mold, rot, and serious damage. And once temperatures drop, repairs get a lot harder. Ice and snow make everything more complicated.

The sooner you act, the better.

Get a proper repair – skip the quick fixes

Sure, there are hardware store patches and sprays that claim to stop leaks. Some of them work for a day or two, but they’re not a real fix. The problem will be back – and worse – if the root cause isn’t dealt with.
When we fix a roof, we don’t just cover up the issue. We find what’s really going on and repair it the right way, using materials that hold up in our tough Alaskan climate.

And if your roof is older or has other warning signs, we may recommend a full inspection to make sure there aren’t more hidden problems.

Make a plan to prevent it from happening again

Once the leak is handled, don’t forget about your roof. A little maintenance can save you a lot of stress down the road. Keep gutters clean, check flashing and shingles a few times a year, and look inside your attic after big storms.

We also recommend an annual inspection – especially in the fall – so you’re not caught off guard when winter hits.
